Australian Food Composition Database Redesign Concept

Australian Food Composition Database
AUSNUT/NUTTAB Redesign Concept

The health and fitness industry is booming, and apps like MyFitnessPal (150m users) and Lifesum (35m users) allow consumers to take control of their food and nutrient intake to help reach their goals. However, these apps suffer from the same shortcomings, the food databases that they run off is maintained by consumers. This can often lead to incorrect or misleading calorie and nutrition information negatively affecting the user experience.

Luckily for us, Food Standards Australia maintains a reference database that contains data on the nutrient content of Australian foods. It is referred to as a reference database because it contains mostly analysed data, meticulously curated by food scientists. This data set is great for consumers and solves some of the issues present in the leading apps available. However, this database is only accessible to consumers as a 5000 line excel spreadsheet.

Below is an initial concept and step towards improving the user experience of the Australian Food Composition Database.
