Stylised Iconic Figures of Famous People

What is it about public figures, icons, superstars, and celebrities that fascinate people so much? After all, the media and fans have been obsessing over them since the dawn of time. It is easy to idolise them as famous people in general have so many qualities to love (and can only dream about). They are living our fantasy, so to speak, while we are so caught up with our ordinary lives.

Because we look for meaning in ourselves, we tend to find answers outside. That’s why, famous people and even social media influencers play a significant part in our understanding of the different cultures, perspectives, and preferences in the world because we are constantly looking for role models to look up to other than our parents and peers.

Surely, famous people have their role models just like we have ours. We are all different yet we’re all the same after all. In reality, anyone can become a symbol or an icon in his or her own right. Some icons, however, have become so legendary and ingrained within our cultural sphere that they carry an almost universal image and definition for something that’s larger than life.

After all, who doesn’t immediately associate Lady Gaga with pop music, Bruce Lee with martial arts, or Karl Lagerfeld with artistry? As part of this exercise, we looked back at one of our design series of stylisediconic figures from 2019. There and then we decided to reopen the project because we are inspired to grow the collection.

Shapes play a big part in the creation of this series; their two-dimensional features set off a clear boundary at the edges and they form a fine balance between the different shapes used and vertical disproportion of body build from top to bottom. The bean-like figures that are the result from this design exercise convey each character’s stark image by referencing an iconic look as how they appeared on screen or the red carpet, which is also the same reason they go down in history for their style.
