Digital Privacy Awareness
Negative Space Icon Set
The goal of this project was to create 3 icons that help to further advance a relevant global activism issue. The issue selected for this project was the fight for digital privacy, specifically concerning the use of consumer data by technology companies. Often, consumers are not aware of the policies that they have agreed to regarding the release of their personal information, and these icons aim to raise awareness of this. The goal is to help people become more conscious of their online decisions in order to put greater power in the user instead of the corporations.
Design 1 makes use of a cloud as positive space and binoculars as the negative space, with two simple strokes emulating a wireless signal that help provide more context to the icon. The cloud represents the user data that we share with big tech corporations, and the binoculars and wireless signals represents how your online movements are being watched and sent elsewhere without your knowledge.

Design 2 is an abstract depiction of a satellite dish that is broadcasting data (the positive space), with the negative space used to hold an eye. The meaning of this icon is that the data that is being broadcast between devices is ultimately being watched as is it is moving between locations and people.
Design 3 depicts a typical phone messaging conversation as the positive space. Instead of negative space being used to simply divide the two message bubbles, a security camera is integrated into these dividing lines to indicate that your conversations are not private, especially when using an unencrypted messaging service. Having the camera spy on both the white and the red bubble indicates that both people are being watched.
