The New Orleans Drawings of Gaston de Pontalba, 1848-1851
The Historic New Orleans Collection

For this exhibition of delicate sketchbook watercolor drawings of New Orleans painted between 1848 and 1851, I wanted the logo identity to give a particular feeling to the show. One that spoke to the refined class from which this artist came from (he was the Baroness Pontalba's son), one that was reminsicent of the scrollwork famous in New Orleans (and for which the famous Pontalba buildings are known for), and one that spoke to feeling of the era—particularly in the commercial center near the water, New Orleans.

Through research into ads for goods and sundries of the day, I settled on the versatile and elegant Burford typeface; even the "naval-rope scrollwork" character is part of one of the families of this font.

The cameos of the artist and the Upper Pontalba Building sprang from a desire of the curator to show an image of the artist. Inspired by mid-19th century flyers, I chose the common cameo oval to present this.
