RANSOM - typeface design

The aim for typeface was to create something that was stylistically punk, but could still be used in non-punk work. This was achieved by creating a bold sans serif font and a full alphabet of alternate letter forms, allowing the font to be quite versatile. Heavily inspired by classic 1970's punk typography, specifically punk zines and Jamie Reids' ransom note style which was popularised by his work for the Sex Pistols, RANSOM aims to bring punk typography into a modern light.
Handwriting was used as the starting point for the base font, paying homage to the bold handwritten covers of punk zines.

The original method of ransom note typography was also taken into consideration. The style was created by ripping or cutting letters from magazines and newspapers to form new words, similar to the construction of a ransom note. Drawing from current magazine covers and brand marks, alternates were created in varying fonts and sizes from modern typography to give the same effect.
