The Civilisation Mission / Screen Print

The Civilisation Mission dates as far back in history as colonisation, which was its root. It is the resultant of the ‘duty’ the European colonisers felt  towards indigenous peoples that were viewed as ‘backward’ or ‘uncivilised’ - a sort of rationale for Westernising them. While the traces of this mission haven’t entirely left us, these screen prints also look to bring forward ideas like Orientalism by using existing media of the time. The print and collage aim to highlight these traces and the past by using one of the many tools employed by the
Civilisation Mission - Soap.
