The Maternity and Child Hospital of Vall d’Hebron is, since 1950, one of the centres with the highest capacity of resolution of complex paediatric processes in Catalunya and in the Spanish state. It is specialized in paediatric, obstetrical and gynaecological assistance, and is a reference in oncology, congenital cardiopathies, neonatology, foetal surgery, and pulmonary interventions. It is a living organism, on a constant transformation process.

The foundation El Somni dels Nens and the responsibles of the new paediatric ICU proposed us the challenge: to transform a cold and critical place in a more friendly environment, facilitating coexistence and communication between health care staff, patients and families. As we always do when developing an ambient graphics project, we set up a work group to involve the whole ICU team in creating a paediatric environment. The outcome of those collaborative sessions was to apply the idea of game to develop the whole graphic system, a game between two teams: tigers and lions. Two captains and two teams that solve the need to divide the space in two zones and bring together all the necessary graphic elements: corridors, counters, room dividers, hospital equipment, rooms, offices, etc.
The challenge has been to boost the idea of overcoming in a difficult environment. The second stage of the project integrates gamification techniques to make staff’s daily work more stimulating, and facilitate their interaction with patients: changing the traditional health care attire for uniforms of each team, designing patients’ pyjamas, identifying elements of each teams, etc.
All elements of the identity system have been applied to:
· Brand identity
· Ambient graphics
· Signage and wayfinding
· Gamification elements (uniforms, pyjamas, etc.)
