This Project

Background
As the world’s total population increases every year, many  countries have a significantly high rate of seniors who are 65 years old or above, which is leading to serious problems such as economic stagnation due to the decline in labor force and increase in social security tax.
Design Thinking
This visualization aims to invite viewers to find out which populations in the world are severely ageing. At the beginning, the world map is filled with light grey. In the process of exploration, viewers can “paint” the world map by hovering over countries and then turning regions into different colors. At the end, a geographical pattern of the top ageing countries would give them an idea where those populations are located and potentially clustered.  Alongside that, the GDP ranking for each country is provided so that viewers can compare the two numbers side by side in seeking a possible relationship between the wealth level and severity of ageing.

The Components

Far left
A key that indicates what does each color shown on the world map represent. If a region is filled with light grey, that means you might want to hover over it find out if this region is within the top ageing populations.
Second on the line
If a user hovers over to certain region, say Germany, and the circle on the information banner would turn red as well as the name of the region (in this case, Germany).
Next
All severely ageing countries are ranked and colored with red of different opacity. A color legend helps identify which regions among the top ones are high up on the list.
Far right
If the circle turns dark grey. That means this region is safe.
