Blood Facts from the American Red Cross

With a master’s degree in school guidance, Patrick Van Amburgh has spent time as a teacher of students undergoing suspension in school and as an ACT coordinator for SLS Residential, a home for adults with psychological issues. Patrick Van Amburgh also gives back to his community and has donated blood a number of times.

The American Red Cross, the largest blood donation organization in the US, has compiled some interesting facts about blood donation in the country. Someone in the US will need blood around every two seconds. This could be needed for accident victims, or people with cancer who are undergoing chemotherapy and sometimes need daily blood transfusions. Many people with sickle cell anemia also need frequent and repeated blood transfusions. The Red Cross also supplies blood in emergency or disaster situations, where many people may need blood all at once.

The donation process is safe and simple, but only about 38 percent of eligible donors (around 10 percent of the population as a whole) donate each year. Half the organization’s donors give blood consistently and regularly. A quarter are first-time donors, and the rest donate occasionally. Donated blood must be used within about 42 days, so it’s important that the supply be regularly replenished. Healthy donors can generally return to give blood every 56 days.
