This is a pattern I worked on with HGTV's Jasmine Roth, for her show "House to Home." She already had a pretty good idea of what she wanted, but I was able to clean up her pattern a little bit and modify it for sizing, angles, and repeatability. Then I cut the stencil of the design and sent it off to her.
Here she is in action. She says it's easiest to cut the board into the perfect size and clean up the edges first, then paint it on, and finally put it in place on the staircase. That way you're not fighting your way up stairs and banging your knees while you paint. It gives you cleaner edges too.
