Swoosh-Whoosh : Blow, Play and Learn

Project Abstract

 To design a tabletop game for special needs children who suffer from speech impairment, that can help in developing speech through play.

Primary Research to understand the user
This research was conducted in B.M. Institute, Ahmedabad, India.
Target group- Prayaas- speech impaired children who have difficulty in speaking

Duration: classes conducted 3 days in 1 week, i.e.3 hours in 7 days
Activities: Activities done in class are common for all the students
Aim of Prayaas: to develop student's activities, early learning skill,
cognitive skill to promote them to higher class
Attention: Each student needs to be individually attended because of
different disabilities

Learning : Students learn numerals 1 to 4 and alphabets - a and b in 4
months with such an approach
likes/ dislikes: students like shape and colours, lights, sound , music,
attention.
Doesn’t like: slow paced works and activities , commands , forceful
orders.

Causes of Speech Impairment
Speech disorders affect the vocal cords, muscles, nerves, and other structures
within the throat.

● brain damage
● muscle weakness
● respiratory weakness
● strokes
● polyps or nodules on the vocal cords
● vocal cord paralysis

Problems Identified
● Inefficient concentration on children because of less working hours.
● Lack of practice at home
● Lack of parent intervention
● Need for speech is lacking
● Need and requirements of different children are different
● Missguided motivation
● Need of increase in exercises to strengthen cheek and throat
muscles
● Learning aid needs to be enhanced
● Present toys gives an insight to speak but does not tend to
develop speech

Design Interventions
● To develop concepts that helps child to exercise regularly in a funway
● Parent and child bonding is to be focused for encouragement and
healthy relation building
● To instil the interesting ways of learning a to z and numerals
● To help child develop vocabulary of daily life objects
● To provoke child to speak and understand the need for speech
through ADL recognition, conversation, story telling activities etc.
