UT Press asked my typography class to design a cover for one of their books. For this project, I focused on creating a type treatment that would incorporate the title into the landscape of the image that was provided by the author. I used Bodoni 72 exclusively on the front and back, as Bodoni is a modern style that has undergone many transitions throughout the years in various releases of the typeface – just like the transitions that Nashville has undergone. The sharp serifs and delicate curves of this typeface brought the feeling of respectability and intelligence befitting a scholarly work such as this. The letters rise out of the landscape of Nashville in this image just as Nashville rose out of the south as a hub of modern ideas and superior education. My cover was chosen for publication and should be printed mid-2017.
This cover is for a reprint of a cookbook printed first in 1913. It is written in a narrative style and very set in its time period, so I focused on creating a lush history for this book with inspiration from antique dishes of that period.
