UT Jazz Festival T-Shirts

When considering the design for the Jazz Festival, it was important to avoid the ever abundant, cliche imagery often associated with jazz. The design needed to be reflective first, of the UT School of Music, and second, of the jazz department and that particular style of music. To avoid using a smattering of jazz instruments in the design, I chose to stick solely with typography. Using the UT standard Gotham typeface in Black, I overlapped the tracking of the letters to establish a popping graphic. Then, I cutout curving lines from the text that are close together on one side, and spread apart on the other. This helped give the text some dimension and visual interest, while loosely referencing the "swing" of jazz rhythms.

Since this festival was geared toward high school students, who appreciate seeing "their names" on their shirts, we decided to list the participating bands on the back. The list was kept very simple due to the lengthy content, only emphasizing the event in bold at the top.

These shirts were extremely well received! We quickly ran out of popular sizes regardless of our effort to order extras. College students in the jazz studio really loved the shirts and requested that the design be reprinted without the festival dates so they can purchase shirts for their group.
