Tulle Art
by Stephanie Trombotti
The artworks presented are not painted nor drawn, they are all made with pieces of tulle - a very fine net fabric. I created and patented this technique based on my studies on graphic design and fashion design.

The process is born in a photograph that I use as a basis for cutting the tulle. First, I study the lights and shadows of the picture to know how to cut the tulle. The next step, after cutting, is positioning the layers of tulle over the canvas to make the image.

The shadows are created by overlaying multiple pieces of tulle, varying the amount thereof depending on how dark an area needs to be.

The pictures that I make with this method cause such an effect that it is confusing to figure out what material the piece is made of. One has to get closer to it and then it becomes clear. What I seek with my work is to arouse curiosity on the viewer, that feeling that invites them to get closer to the piece.

Pointillism has inspired me to devise this technique, it helped me figure out how to use tulle to produce images. The colored artwork is based in the fundamentals of color of pointillism and impressionism, where the artists use primary colors to create the visual effect of many other colors. In my colored artwork, I have used red, blue and yellow tulle, and overlaying them in the right places makes the effect of the colors I want for the piece.

I have always been fascinated with pop art, that’s why the subject matter of this series is taken from pop culture. As it can be seen, most of the images are of classic pop icons.

I love playing and experimenting with different materials, seeing where creativity and imagination can take me. For that reason, making images through non conventional materials is fulfilling and magical to me.
