The Close to you box is a special edition of a Carpenters album, part of an anti-anorexia campaign. Anorexia is a cold, lonely affliction, and those who suffer from it often isolate themselves from their loved ones. On the other hand, Karen Carpenter’s voice is renowned for its warmth and beauty. The concept brings these elements together around the idea of staying close to those who suffer from anorexia.
Opening the box
The outer box is a cold, icy white, with nothing on it except for the Carpenters logo on the lid. The blind embossed logo encourages people to touch the box, a first step into the 'Close to you' concept. Upon opening the box, there is a strong contrast between the cold white of the outside and the warm red on the inside.
Inside the box
Using a pop-up mechanism, upon opening the box a bird suddenly appears, just like in the lyrics of the song 'Close to you.' Similarly, on the next page stars fall down from the sky, also following the song lyrics. Buried deepest within the packaging is the CD itself, containing all the warmth of Karen’s voice.
