Written by George Wolfe, “The Colored Museum” has been described as audaciously funny and relentlessly thought-provoking. It has electrified, discomforted and delighted audiences of all backgrounds since it premiered in 1986. Performed as 11 individual scenes or “exhibits,” the play uses stinging wit to confront stereotypes old and new.

“The Colored Museum” carries the audience through 200 years of African-American culture, examining with irreverence what it has meant to be black in America. Presenting a collection of well-worn stereotypes, the vaudevillian “exhibits” in the comedy include “Cookin’ with Aunt Ethel,” “The Gospel According to Miss Roj” and “The Last Mama-on-the-Couch Play.”
