Hive is a sculptural, interactive garment that explores the core concepts of emergence. Emergence being a term that describes the way complex systems and patterns arise out of a multiplicity of relatively simple interactions.
The garment manifests as a sculptural piece that references the movement and structure of the human shoulder joint in a simple but dynamic way.
Hive was created through the recycling of abandoned beehives, using both the honeycomb and the framing to spark a wide spectrum of senses that include smell, touch, texture, light quality, and a rich aesthetic.
The lighting scheme expresses the complexities that arise from simple interactions while taking advantage of the beautiful diffusing capabilities of the honeycomb. This is achieved by using the x, y, and z readings of the accelerometer to alter how many LEDs are on, their brightness, and how fast they pulse in order to showcase varied levels of complexity.
