Dante's Inferno: Gluttony

finished size 14”x10”

This is a digital illustration inspired from Dante’s Inferno. “[Dante’s Inferno] is a telling of the journey or Dante through Hell, guided by the Roman poet Virgil. In the poem, Hell is depicted as nine circles of suffering located within the Earth. Allegorically, the Divine Comedy represents the journey of the soul toward God, with the Inferno describing the recognition and rejection of sin.”

The Third Circle of Hell: Gluttony, was chosen. The gluttons lie here sightless and heedless of their neighbors, symbolizing the cold, selfish, and empty sensuality of their lives. This particular character ate an excess of food in his life and suffers to forever fail in satisfying his hunger.

This piece was also selected and printed in MSUM’s Literary Journal Red Weather #34 issue 2.

Red Weather is an annual print journal of poetry, prose, and visual arts edited and designed by students of MSUM. The journal is dedicated to sharing the voices of MSUM students, alumni, faculty and staff.
