STYR is a smartphone app that collects data from bicyclists for Trafikverket in Sweden. Today Trafikverket hire external survey companies to investigate what bikers think about the traffic on a specific street. This information is then used to improve that street. This method is not so quantitative, because trafikverket need to know in advance which street they need to improve.

 

Me and my collaborators identified this problem, and our solution was to use the gyro sensors in the smartphone which can detect sudden breaks and bumps from tens of thousands of bikeriders if they have the STYR app. This data makes it easier for Trafikverket to know where of all the street they need to improve the roads and signs. But to make the cyclist to use the app we also added functionality which makes it easier for them to choose which road to take, due to traffic, road constructions, accidents etc.

 

We created a film that explains the issue and shows the solution. For this we bult a prototyp in the tool Axure and animated in after affects.
