Most people abandon their bicycle to the storage room after the summer. There’s many reasons for that. Too much snow and ice on the bike trails, no appropriate cycling gear or maybe the idea just feels unpleasant. In many cases the reason is one’s attitude, because cycling is the fastest way to move in the center area, also in the winter. In the summer of 2013 congestions of bicycles were seen in the center, the network of bicycle routes was improved and the bicycle racks filled up with an accelerating pace. In the autumn the city of Helsinki promised to invest 5-10 million euros annually to the building of new bicycle roads. This sum provides the main roads of the downtown area with bicycle lanes and gets the network of Baanas (lanes for light traffic) into a good start.

 

How do I dress for winter cycling, how would I improve traffic planning or what kind of ideas could I provide for the improvement of winter cycling? There can be many different subjects. The winner were announced in the Winter Cyclist of the Year-event in the Bicycle center on Narinkkatori, on Saturday the 16th of November, from 14.00 onwards. You could get your bicycle fixed for winter, free of charge and participate in a led-light lit bicycle parade through the city.
