Ceramic Vase and Plate

Ceramic Vase and Plate

White Earthenware fired and decorated with burnt horse hair.

Gave this set to my Mother for Mother's Day.

The vase was made by using a potters wheel while the plate was created by using a variety of different clay coils that were pushed and laid on top of each other around a square mold. Both pieces were then left to dry for about a week until bone try then fired to cone 06. Once fired both pieces were then heated back up so that when the horse hair was laid on to them it would burn. Very smelly but creates wonderful organic designs. Then I let the two pieces cool off over night. When both pieces were cooled down I sprayed them with gloss finish to give them a shine and to protect the ceramic. There are many flaws and imprefections in both pieces but they kind of add a rawness and weathered look to the two pieces. Combine that with the coloration you get with the burnt horse hair makes for pretty unique piece. I really enjoyed how they turned out and am currently making several more with different sized plates and vases. I am also in the process of creating my own raku kiln to expand on the limits of what I can do in the classroom.

I am still very much a amateur when it comes to ceramics and pottery but I really enjoy making and building works of art with my hands. I love to draw with the both graphite and charcoal but working with clay is a different feeling.

I hope you enjoy.
