Poem & Article Illustrations for the OUTLET Art & Literary Journal

Introduction: In addition to the OUTLET group project, each student in my graphic design class needed to individually design illustrations for two articles and two poems written and submitted by English students for the OUTLET Art & Literary Journal 2023.
Poem 1: This poem is titled "Clay" by Antonella Fernandez.
DISCOVER: I looked at many references related to the idea of clay, misshapen, molded, smashed etc. I even made some of my own references. I was so delighted to have found a misshaped female sculpture being thrown away and re-melted with discarded clay in the sculpture class room! So, I of course had to take a picture of that! I also later made the clay title out of actual clay.

Here are my sketch ideas:
DESIGN: I then experimented with these ideas and more digitally in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop.
DELIVER: After much feedback from my graphic design class and professor here was the final design:
And to my surprise, when the big day came for our class to choose which student design should be chosen for this poem they decided to choose mine. :) With some more feedback, I did some extra final refinements to my design before having it entered into the OUTLET Art and Literary journal. Here is the final design:

Poem 2: This poem is titled "Connett" by Cenneidigh Peters
DISCOVER: Luckily, the author to this poem was also our graphic design class TA, so my classmates and I could talk to her personally and retrieve some photos of her brother who the poem was about. I viewed several references of her brother as well as some other ideas online. Here are my sketch ideas:
DESIGN: Here are my experimented digital sketches that I did on a digital app called Procreate.
DELIVER: After much feedback and refinement, here is the final design:

Article 1: This article is titled "A Mother's Fate" by Lanea Mediar
DISCOVER: As the design process goes, I looked at several references and sketched out ideas based on what the story was about.
