The abacus design language study was made up for integrated design element that: -Unify HP’s calculator family through consistency in ID and UI. -Distinguish between technical and financial category elements. -Accommodate Learner and Doer target needs.
One focus of the project was to convey a hierarchy of design elements to the user. The primary element of the selected language is the continuous structural frame with visible material thickness. This element creates a robust surrounding frame relating to HP’s heritage of quality and reliability. Light and dark shades of gray, orange, and blue, offer the best clarity for nomenclature and enhances the calculator’s tool-like aesthetic. Low reflectivity finishes on math key / palette surfaces ensure legibility.
