The Problem
If these dhows could talk
Dhow's are a vital part of the UAE's cultural heritage. However, as technology and transportation have changed over the years, it has become a relic of the past. This proactive project aspires to bring the stories of retired dhows back to life with the use of Augmented Reality (AR). Making UAE history tangible to all who are curious enough to learn.
The Idea
A digital time capsule of maritime heritage
By using AR, we can tell the story of the dhow in a fun and interactive manner. Through this initiative we can intrigue and engage with citizens, residents, and tourists alike to teach them about the rich history of the UAE proud maritime heritage.
The AR Element
See history come to life with a simple scan.
To make this initiative as simple as possible to use and interact with, it would be integrated into Instagram's existing AR lens library. Visitors point their smartphones at the dhows and the AR interface brings them to life showing the history and significance of the dhow in the UAE's culture.
People 'scan' the dhow with their phones and animations and information come to life.
The Social Element
Rediscovering our heritage, one story at a time.
To drive engagement and awareness, the campaign would also encourage users to get out and explore the city while discovering the history of the dhow. It makes cross-platform shareability easier thus increasing awareness and eventual conversions.
As a way to make the exploration element further, a microsite can be developed with additional information about the dhows as well as a map on where people can find them.
The dhow comes to life. Narration and information immerse users in the rich heritage.
