Domesto's Hand Sanitizer

For my final brief in third year I was given the choice of four different briefs, as part of the 'D&AD New Blood Awards 2014'. This gives me a chance to work on an industry recognised project - something I've not had the chance to do before.

I chose to work on the Domestos brief, where I had to design a product that would act as a catalyst in a city-wide behavioural change in the health and lifestyle category.
I decided that I would base my project around the city of London, as a population of over 15 million people, and of that nearly 3 million people use the Underground train system per day.

People on the move throughout the city carry germs and bacteria and can one persons hand can hold as much as 3 million different types of bacteria. So I thought designing a sleek hand sanitizing dispenser would help restrict the spread of germs throughout the city.

The Final Prototype is made from grade 304 Stainless Steel. As well as having a high quality finish, the material needs minimal effort to clean as the surfaces are smooth.
The product fits in well into its surroundings on the middle escalator divider. As escalators are made from polished Stainless Steel the product doesn’t look out of place.
The prototype takes the form of a simple ‘T’shape which make the product look balanced and elegant.Throughout the research phase of the project I found it important that both sides of pedestrian traffic are being accomodated for so the shape of the dispenser allows for this.
As this is only a prototype, I have made one side of the dispenser work with Arduino. Showing what the product would do if the dispensing technology had been put in.
