Population Density Analysis, Ukraine 2023-02-28
The aim of this work was to a) identify and calculate the ratio between coastal and inland areas with high population density, and b) visualize were these areas coincide with high altitudes.
Data
Borders, population and elevation data was collected from sources such as NASA, EUROSTAT, ETOPO and streamlined with the WGS84 projection (to fit the morphology of Ukraine). Below are visualizations of the original projections.
Thresholds
Before starting the analysis phase, thresholds was decided.
• High Population Density - 2000x/km2
• High Altitudes - 300m
• Coastal - 50km
Analysis
The overall analysis was performed with ArcGIS Model Builder, which is a tool to save and automate chains of data manipulation. A few parts was also done outside Model Builder with Raster Calculator and Python coding.
Process & Tools
• Data Collection
• Projection Synchronization
• Data Extraction
• Data Conversion
• Data Merge
• Summary Statistics & Field Calculator
• Symbology & Design
Below, the buffer, stretching 50km around the coastal border, that was used to isolate high density populations in coastal zones.
Final Map
The final result presented on a map and barchart displaying the ratio between coastal and inland areas with high population density (that landed on approximately 9:1).
Poster
The final work was also presented as a poster that included descriptions of a) projection of choise, b) projections in general and c) buffers.
