Matthew Bowler // Honours Student 2023
My work mostly focuses on telling a story through different mediums, I like to think about what an illustration, or a photograph will mean to someone as well as how it looks. With my projects this year I have been able to explore how to create a narrative within different designs or products. By exploring new techniques and honing my skills as a crafter as well, I have become a better design altogether.
One of my main projects this year has focused on creating a pitch for a short film, this has been a collaboration with another student. I worked on creating concept art which captures the mood of scene as well as showcasing how lighting could affect the atmosphere, in addition to the concept art created, character designs and storyboards were produced alongside a pitch deck which outlines how the film would be made. Working with this kind of project has really allowed me to focus on creating a rich narrative within the work that I otherwise wouldn’t always get to do with many other projects.
In addition to the film project, I took on two other projects. These included branding for a leather goods company and producing a special edition of an older book from my childhood. With these additional projects I’m able to showcase my range of skills beyond illustration.
