Toy Story Minion Mash-Up

Toy Story-Minion Mash-Up
Creation of a movie poster with a twist to design a new movie
This piece is called “Toy Story-Minion Mash-Up”. This piece represents the combination of the movies Toy Story, Despicable me & Minions’ Rise of Gru. I took the minion characters and “mashed” them in with the characters from Toy Story, creating Toy Story 5- The Rise of The Minions. The idea was to recreate a movie poster, while merging two movies into one, to create a new one. The emphasis of this particular project focused on the emphasis of the use of typography and overall graphic design.

This project consisted of working in Adobe Photoshop for the majority of the time, then working in Adobe Illustrator for the creation of the typography. After a total of five-semester projects, I felt more confident and comfortable using both Photoshop and Illustrator. I was able to utilize more tools and work through the application more efficiently.

The first couple of versions of this project had fewer minions present, and the shadows below the minions were absent. After I began inserting the first few minions, I realized in order to portray the minions best I was going to need a lot of them. So, I placed them in as many spots as I thought visually looked right and made sure they weren’t all in the same plane of view. After I received feedback from my peers on my “final” version I only added a couple of minor details. I added the shadows below the minions to make the piece complete, making them match the shadows below the other toy story characters.

Concept Development
My inspiration for this project began with searching on google images for movies. When first given this project, I was not too excited about it. I do not watch very many movies and I felt like I didn’t really know very many off the top of my head. So, I decided to think of when I was younger and did watch more movies. I started googling Pixar movies and movies by the release years and that is how I came up with the idea to mash together Toy Story and Minions. Photoshop was used for the majority of the project and Illustrator for the typography. The main tools I used in this piece were the eraser, spot healing, stamping, paintbrush, and quick selection tools. The longest part of creating this piece was having to erase the original logo from the windows and then redraw the majority of the windows and top woodwork with the stammer tool. After redrawing that, I started finding minion images I wanted to use and cut them out using the quick selection subject tool. Before inserting the minions in, I removed a couple of the toy story characters so it would not look as cramped and to allow room for the mash-up to occur. I tried my best to match the minion’s colors, and then found places for them to go in the image. There are a total of nine minions present in the movie poster. Lastly, I opened up Illustrator and started designing the text it took me about four different designs and a lot of font searching and downloading to find the one I thought fit the best.
