Second International Competition – Micro Eco House 2022

Organized by the Ekokultplus Association, the University of Belgrade - Faculty of Architecture and Magazine for eco architecture and culture EKO KUĆA for young architects, designers, landscape architects, applied artists up to the age of 30 and faculty students to develop a concept for micro house and to tackle the questions of existential minimum for residence, sustainability and eco design.

Shape of the house is based on the interpretation of archetypical log cabin and watermill in Serbia. It is imagined as a monolithic structure in the landscape with dominant openings in its south, western and eastern façade. Not only do they give a direct contact to the terrace with a view of the nature, they also allow passive heat gain during winter (through the south window), as well as natural ventilation through symmetrical openings (east-west). To create a stronger connection with the archetype, final layer is done in traditional wooden shingles.
Zones of the house are arranged linearly with clear separation and defined flow, but constantly visually connected. Night zone is left as a flexible space that can be transformed into the work or relaxation area after the bed is closed in the “wardrobe” While the big windows on west and east façade make it possible for day and night zone to be connected with the outside.
In accordance with the idea of a watermill, production of the electrical energy relies on the river over which we placed our house. The mill wheel is connected to the installation systems that transform collected energy. The river is also a source of water for the users, collected through channels under the house; as well as the rain water.
Loadbearing construction of columns and beams is made out of wood. In order to make the construction stiff, and at the same time avoid classical wind bracing, we proposed prefabricated CLT panels 10 cm thick. Construction of classical hipped roof is visible in the interior. House is insulated using hempcrete blocks made in situ. In order to achieve desired U-values, they are drawn thicker than usual…
