So for a first year module we were entered into the 2014 Pengun book competition, this was a scary thought asa first year designer. We would be up against not only our own year, the years above us but all the other universities competing. However I feel my design works as a book cover.

The spine was a key thing to consider as it has to be striking to look at and i think thats a success. The spine itself makes and image of a long thin cigarette bud with the main text being blocked with the orange then a line down the white to contrast with a blue colour in and then the logo is set within the ash of the spine.

The front cover as a whole is almost as if it is a picture frame is focusing on the cigarette in the centre of the cover with the characters being represented as these vectorised cigarettes not really diving into the storyline rather the characteristics of the main members of the greasers whom are seen smoking constantly and Ponyboy calling himself a "weed fiend" reffering to the cigarettes he smoked.

The back cover was interesting and more difficult to get right and look as smooth and simple as the front, using the cigarette shape but not constricting the blurb on the back but covering it subtly. The little details such as the part cigarette that can be seen balances out the empty space left on the left side of the book.

This is the full computer version of the cover and I think it is key to note the spacing and layout of typography within my design, following the Penguin books logo consitently but making the title of the book seem more prominent than the authors name as she isn't a house hold name within the UK. The spacing of the blurb is purposely done to make the user really think and it follows the crumpled cigarette end in it.

Overall the piece is solid getting feedback from all years which is has all been strong, I have constantly been asking for feedback from my lecturers and it has certainly paid of as at the beginning of this project I had no sense of idea where to take this design and now this has become of it and i'm proud.
