WSJ - Buying the Dip

I was approached by The Wall Street Journal to create animations for their next Glossary series video, Buying the Dip. The goal was to educate viewers on the concept of buying the dip: buying stocks right when they're at the bottom of a massive dip to maximize the gains when they bounce back.

A collage-style animation was used to keep a visual consistency with other videos in the Glossary series. The fishing boats were visual representations of investors fishing for stock options, hoping to catch a winner.
Case Study
01 - Storyboard
The client had a script and a rough VO for me to work with. I quickly created a rough storyboard based on the clients requests and used previous WSJ videos as a visual guideline. Once the storyboard was complete we could better understand the overall scope of the animation work required. A lot of the shots were cut due to a short turnaround on the project, but this allowed more time to refine the main animations that were utilised to illustrate the overall concept.

02 - Styleframe
With the concept approved I moved onto the design. The client requested a stop-motion collage aesthetic to match the visual language of their previous videos. I colour-coded the stoyboard to help distinguish the unique element in each shot and realized there were only a couple repeating assets required. I created a single styleframe to both build the assets and showcase a complete shot.

03 - First pass vs. Final
It's always interesting to compare the first pass and the final pass. Simple additions such as textures, ambient motion, and dropping the frame-rate are what create the final style.
Thank you for your time.
