In American society black bodies are often subjected to certain stereotypes. The concept of this exhibition is to show the image of a black individual in various capacities in hopes to shed light on the recognition, or lack thereof, on stereotypes that are placed on the collective of black people based off their color and outer appearance that has been exploited in various ways historically up to present day yet through it all black is still a crime. The objective being to showcase this with a thought-provoking body of work.
Previously Kellyman has worked to promote the positive representation of black individuals in media, activism and the arts. After years of working to provide opportunities and working towards the corrective promotion of black people within the media Kellyman noticed many stereotypes and biases placed on them which inspired him to create the exhibition “Skin Deep: The American Stereotype” to shed light on this hindering mindset.
