My Formal Study of Cardboard as a Medium
My goal was to push the boundaries of what can be done with a substance that most people see as flat and rigid.
All of my pieces incorporate a juxtaposition between sharp rigid shapes and curves which I think draws all of the pieces together in unity while also causing them to flow individually in an interesting way.
My process of design was significantly different than any other art I had made before as I took a broader, more abstract stance on how I approached each piece. In the past when I’ve made art I’ve planned out each piece and made most of my artistic decisions before I even began, but I found that because I was exploring the cardboard as a medium, it felt more natural to just start with a vague idea of what I wanted then build from there.
Any time I did try to plan, the cardboard took a path of its own, and I found a different, better path to go on than the original plan I had which often allowed me to produce unique and unexpected pieces.
