These are a few of the first neon portraits I took in 2019 in Melbourne, Australia. During that time, I started to experiment taking portraits with artificial lights in the nighttime.

When shooting this kind of portrait with additional reflective equipment such as discs, glass filters or prisms, it can be difficult to hold the camera still with one hand, while adjusting reflections and framing with the other.

In order to get sharp images, it helps to know the longest shutter speed of the lens which you can shoot handheld with. For people with steady hands, this can be roughly the reciprocal value of the focal length, e.g. for a 85mm lens it would be 1/85th of a second. You should avoid to go beyond this shutter speed to enhance sharpness.
Additionally, I always try to hold my breath to maintain stability.
