Highlights of The Strange Planet of SUBNAUTICA: Fountain Pen
Motivation: I was really into a survival video game named Subnautica, which takes place on an alien aquatic planet inhabited with unique biomes, flora, fauna, ancient technology, and architecture. I enjoyed playing with letters in words since I was little, turning my name into animals, and with this project, I had a huge variety of in-game features at my disposal.
What I wanted to capture: I wanted to show the extreme level of detail and creativity behind the devs that went into this game using its logo (bottom left). I played with the distinction between "Sub-" and "-nautica", including my favorite landmarks (ancient machine gun/base), animals (reaper with 4 mandibles, sea emperor in the alien portal). I had a lot of fun figuring out how to represent these elements in letters.
What I used: I used a fine point pen nib with an ink pot to make an incredibly detailed depiction faithful to the amazing quality textures that I admire about the game. My favorite includes the ancient architectural carvings and symbols on the precursor buildings, and the texture of the semi-transparent membrane of the giant jelly mushroom tree (at the "T").
