Travel Website Case Study—Poland
By: Kate Brodowska
INTRODUCTION
A potential travel website for people who are traveling to Poland, yet not interested in the usual historical sites, but ones which are slightly odd/unusual.
WHY THIS WEBSITE OVER OTHERS?
The website deals exclusively with unusual destinations in Poland. The 'Home' image is of the 'Tatry Mountains', not what most think of when considering Poland as a travel destination.
PERSONAS
Philip (Lip), Olivia (Liv), and their two kids will be traveling to Poland for Lip's work. Liv is naturally expected to be present as the brains behind Lip's film production agency. As parents, they include their children in all that the real-world experience has to offer and take them on work-travel trips all the time. Both parents agree that they want to expose their kids to Polish culture and be fully immersed in it, but they don't want to visit WWII sites, as they see it as morbid.
WHO ARE LIP AND LIV?
GOAL
To provide a website tailored to the tastes and interests of both personas and taking their focus for 'alternative education' and bringing it to a single source—from lodging to attractions.
EXISTING VISUAL LANDSCAPE
PROBLEM
No websites for alternative Polish travel exists.
I believe that none of the sites, logos or campaigns are successful—they seem dated and only geared toward a very mature traveler. The websites are focused on history, but the known aspects of it, like the concentration camps from WWII and nothing about folklore or weird traditions.
My website is targeted toward adventurers, young families and generally people who avoid tourist attractions—those who want to discover something unique about the country they're in.
The three logos I was able to find associated with Polish travel also fall flat and are uninspired—they’re based on the Polish flag’s colors. The only logo that tried to break away from that mold did so unsuccessfully—it brakes completely away from Poland’s identity.
My website’s logo will be clean and representative of the country of Poland in some clever way. I don’t think it’s wise to stick with a palette of white and red for the logo, as this limits the overall color scheme of the website. My logo will be a simple white on black or black on white, which would then allow for the use of a limitless color palette.
SOLUTION
The website will offer an alternative color palette which is drawn from the two personas. It will focus exclusively on the interests of the two personas, whilst taking their kid's needs under consideration. The logo I created moves away from the expected white and red flag colors but gives a subtle nod to the culture through the typography choice.
